Initial Consultation
This meeting is a time to discuss the client's goals for the space. It is a time when the designer makes notes about the client's likes and dislikes and very often takes initial photographs (if the client has no objections). It is not a time for the designer to make recommendations or in anyway begin the design process. There is no fee for this initial consultation and this consultation time is not a part of hours that may be later contracted.
At this initial consultation, the designer will take time to explain the fee system and discuss the client's budget goals and concerns. The contract for services and the retainer fee (which is non-refundable but is deducted from the final billing) will be presented. The client may choose to sign the contract and pay the retainer fee at the conclusion of the initial consultation or they may choose to set a later date for their decision. The design process begins only when these two processes have been completed.
Design Stage
Following the signing of the contract services and the payment of the retainer fee, the design development stage begins and a schedule is set for the presentation of the design concept, necessary drawings, design boards (with fabric samples and other illustrations), and budget reviews. The design service fee for this stage is based on an hourly fee. The client is able to set a maximum amount that they wish to budget for this phase and the client may choose to complete the project installation without further services of the designer.
Project Administration
The client may instead choose to have a complete turn-key service from the designer including master planning, design development, project administration, procurement of interior furnishings, art work and accessories, millwork, lighting, and all interior finishes. The designer will locate necessary carpenters, painters, seamstresses, electricians, lighting specialists, furniture, artisans, and other specialists to complete the project installation. All sub-contracts are contracts between the client and the subcontractor only. The supervisory services of the designer (if desired by the client) are completed and billed at the specified hourly rate and are paid directly to the designer.
